Animal Crossing: New Horizons is the latest entry in Nintendo’s beloved Animal Crossing series, which lets players customize the world around them while making friends with the series’ unique animal inhabitants. Moving the game to an island setting for the Switch-exclusive entry, Animal Crossing: New Horizons’ vast array of items and accessories available to players has led to some inspired fan creations. From holiday-themed player housing to the gamer who turned their Animal Crossing: New Horizons island into an homage to the Ace Attorney games, players have the freedom to shape the game nearly any way they like.

In a post on r/AnimalCrossing, Reddit user Pingpongdotcom shared a picture of a unique copy of Animal Crossing: New Horizons they found for sale at a local thrift shop. While many of the series’ iconic characters are seen on the cover, as one would expect, they are all individually framed in the type of comic-inspired collage instantly familiar to fans of the Grand Theft Auto series. Completing the GTA homage is the title of the game, now stylized to look like the GTA: Vice City cover text.
Animal Crossing fans responding to the unexpected mashup were delighted by the creative blending of the two franchises, with some commenters sharing humorous ideas for a crossover game bringing the two IPs together. One redditor, attempting to find the source of the unique cover art, posited that it could be from a Japanese second-hand shop that sold a similar copy last year. Animal Crossing: New Horizons is popping up in all sorts of unexpected places lately, with one gamer recently sharing a picture of a bootleg Animal Crossing LEGO set found at a discount store.
This hilarious and bizarre mixing of gaming properties is sure to delight fans of both franchises, possibly giving some players inspiration for their own off-the-wall mashups. And while it’s probably safe to assume that gamers won’t see GTA 5’s Trevor Philips palling around with Tom Nook in the next Animal Crossing: New Horizons expansion, at least it gives fans of Rockstar’s crime opus something to laugh about while they wait for Grand Theft Auto 6.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons is available now for Nintendo Switch.
