For the uninitiated, Animal Crossing: New Horizons only allows one island per Switch. Other players using the same Switch can still create their own character, but they will be constantly competing with their fellow players over the island’s limited resources. Local co-op also doesn’t allow for any split-screen options, so when two people play Animal Crossing: New Horizons at the same time on the same Switch, they’re stuck close together. To make matters worse, only the person who founded the island can make any significant progress, so the other players have to wait for them to continue the game to have access to more features and areas on the island.

Animal Crossing fans are understandably upset about this, and so while review bombing a game with 0/10 is still not necessarily “fair,” this situation is a little easier to understand than other instances of review-bombing over the years. Some of the negative reviews on Metacritic, of which there are currently 258 and growing, are from parents who bought the game for their kids, and how only having one island has caused some headaches.

Basically, the only way for Animal Crossing: New Horizons players in the same household can each have their own island and a proper experience with the game is by owning multiple Switch consoles. It’s an unfortunate situation for those who purchased a Nintendo Switch for the family to share instead of giving everyone in the house their own individual console, and sadly, it’s not something that’s likely to be changed in a patch or future updates.

In fact, Animal Crossing: New Horizons players may be waiting a long time for any updates to the game, let alone one that addresses the 1 island restriction. It’s been confirmed that the coronavirus pandemic could cause Animal Crossing: New Horizons updates to be delayed, so those playing the game should keep that in mind.

While it seems unlikely that Nintendo will change the Animal Crossing: New Horizons 1 island limit, perhaps the company will keep these complaints in mind for the next game in the series, whenever that may be.
