On the May Day island is a maze that players can explore. Completing the maze grants access to a handful of tangible rewards. Completing the maze without wasting any items will result in the player earning a total of 9 different Bell Vouchers, making for 27,000 Bells in total rewards. There’s also a unique, event-exclusive item earned only after completing the maze. It’s an item named Rover’s Briefcase, which is a literal briefcase covered with stamps as if it’s traveled the world.

For those unfamiliar, Rover is a special Animal Crossing character going all the way back to the original game. Rover typically took on the role of bringing the player to their new home, where Tom Nook would take over and set players up with homes. Rover was oddly missing from Animal Crossing: New Horizons, however. At least, until now.
Rover the cat is waiting for the player at the end of the May Day maze. He’s somewhat of a reward himself, since a lot of players have been hoping to see Rover once more. After finishing the maze, players can talk to Rover for a short while about where he’s been and what he’s up to. He even teases visiting the player’s island. Then he gives his briefcase to the player and disappears once more.
Players are able to visit the island once per day through May 7. If players complete the maze every day, that’s almost 200,000 Bells going into their pocket. Plus, it’s fun just to get away for a little while and have some fun. Fishing and bug-catching to upgrade your home can wait a little while longer.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons players should take note that it’s possible to mess up the order of cutting down trees and breaking rocks. Save fruit only for obstacles that help build the steel axe. Players will need those fruit to break a final series of three rocks that block access to several Bell Vouchers. If players don’t have enough fruit to break the rocks after finishing the maze, it can be reset using a Rescue Call. This costs the player 100 Nook Miles, though. Players will have to weigh if it’s worth it.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons is available now on Nintendo Switch.
