While a Disney and Animal Crossing mashup has been done before with a player recreating the Magic Kingdom in New Horizons, this Monsters Inc. basement is wonderful. The project is impressive even from a quick glance, but it is in the finer details that really make it something to appreciate. Despite the look, the room itself is just that, one room, but Emilyx38 utilized a wallpaper trick to provide the illusion of two sides of the door. On the one, the world of monsters featuring hazmat suits, a Monster University Hat, and drum barrels. On the human side, players will quickly notice the painting featuring Boo and Sully alongside a cheeky clownfish.
Despite the last Monsters Inc. film was released back in 2013 with Monsters University, the film franchise was not forgotten by Disney or video game developer and publisher Square Enix. The world of Monsters Inc. featured in 2019’s Kingdom Hearts 3, being the first time Sora alongside Donald and Goofy got to explore the Disney world. The film series will also receive an animated TV show spin-off called Monsters at Work that will release on Disney+.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons recreations are nothing new but seeing a player utilize a basement to create such a tribute is something unique. There are many player projects in New Horizons that demonstrate a creativity within the audience. The game has even started to gain significant traction with celebrities showing off their love of Animal Crossing. Captain Marvel and Room actress Brie Larson revealed her favorite villager on her YouTube channel while playing New Horizons.
With the Animal Crossing: New Horizons community growing, the creativity flowing from the players will only expand. The Switch exclusive remains a sales juggernaut with New Horizons being June’s third highest selling game. As more and more players take control of Tom Nooks island getaway, there are inevitably more passion projects set to come.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons is available now for Nintendo Switch.
