Nintendo employee Rob Heiret admitted their transgression on Twitter Sunday morning. “If you’ve played [Animal Crossing: New Horizons], you’re tired of the sea bass joke. I get it. I’M tired of the sea bass joke, and I wrote it,” is Heiret’s confession. But Heiret also reveals that the sea bass joke also makes him somewhat proud.

Heiret describes that the current sea bass pun was not the original version of it. Initially, the joke was, “I caught a sea bass! Well… maybe a C- bass…” While perhaps a funnier joke, the localization team decided that for a fish that would be caught very often, a positive spin would be better. The C- joke because a C+ joke, insinuating the sea bass was better than average.
Heiret explains that the positivity within the Animal Crossing: New Horizons community humbles him. He describes how players have done in-game birthday parties, or have even erected memorials to lost loved ones. And through this he sees how the affirmations, the positivity the localization team and the original developers put into Animal Crossing: New Horizons, have helped foster this community. Even the sea bass joke.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons is available now on Nintendo Switch.
